Microsoft Reveals ‘Minecraft’ has an Astonishing 112 million Monthly Players

It’s been apparent to anyone who has been paying to the news that Minecraft is experiencing an increase in popularity lately however, now we can quantify that to some degree.

Microsoft has told Business Insider this week that Minecraft has risen to 112 million monthly users which is a 20 million increase from the figures for October. This game has been around for a decade, and more relevant than ever before.

Other than “it’s great and people love it” there are a variety of reasons for the recent increase in Minecraft. There was a major update around the ten year anniversary which added a ton of new content. PewDiePie, a 100 million-subscriber YouTuber, is the one who is credited with bringing the game back to the “influencer” scene. His channel was devoted to Minecraft over the last few months. Fortnite’s declining popularity is evident as players leave the megahit to other games, like Minecraft.

Minecraft’s growth is even more impressive considering that on most platforms, it isn’t actually free, unlike Fortnite. Some may attribute Microsoft putting it in the Xbox Game Pass as a move that has boosted its player base even more.

Fortnite appears to be aware that Minecraft is attracting less players which is the reason we’ve seen the birth of Creative Mode in that game and continued devotion to expanding it. However, Minecraft remains the original, and it should continue to capitalize on its popularity through future releases like Minecraft Dungeons, which is a combination of the original and Diablo-like dungeons and looting.

Overall, the common refrain I hear from Minecraft players is that it’s a game people love to return to after an extended period of time. In this instance it was an effect of snowballs in which so many people returned to the game together that it was as if old friends could all join the game at the same time and have the same enjoyment today like they did a few years ago.

Microsoft’s $2.5 billion purchase of Minecraft felt kind of odd at the time, but now they control one of the most played games on the planet. Huliypin I’m willing to wager that 112 million monthly players is more than Fortnite is currently playing and is possibly only competing with mobile games on the same level. It’s truly amazing.

Expect Minecraft to last for the rest of time. It will be relevant in the future with new releases such as Minecraft Dungeons, Minecraft Earth and the AR game which will focus on Pokemon Go in the next.
